BCSTuesday's announcement that big-time college football would institute a four-team playoff beginning in 2014 was met mostly with cheers. But not everybody was celebrating the death of the Bowl Championship Series. Here is a sampling of opinions from around the country.

Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! The BCS finally has a stake driven through its heart, but bowl games and big bucks still reign.

Tom Shatel, Omaha World-Herald: Tuesday was all about the old guard going away.

Dennis Dodd, CBS Sports.com: Playoff criticism isn't a popular topic at the moment, but the little players have to wonder if they'll ever matter again.

David Teel, Newport News Daily Press: A playoff is something even Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Sonia Sotomayor could agree on.

Bryan Burwell, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: It was a great day for people who hate the BCS.

Mike Herndon, Mobile Press-Register: The death of the BCS ensures there won't be another 2004 Auburn. Or does it?

Kent Babb, Kansas City Star: So there won’t be any more screw-ups, computer-generated nonsense or Lew Perkins-influenced bowl berths? Where’s the fun in that?

Andy Staples, SI.com: The approval of the playoff was a joyous and overdue day for big-time college football.

Monte Poole, Bay Area News Group: Yes, there will be a playoff and the coaches will continue to receive seven-figure salaries. But the best student-athletes will continue to get no salary and no perks other than the scholarship.

Keith Sargeant, Scarlet Scuttlebutt: Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti envisions a day when the playoff includes more than four teams.

Joseph Morton, Omaha World-Herald: The controversy will now shift to the Nos. 5 and 6 teams that are shut out.

Dick Weiss, New York Daily News: Is this just a case of the rich getting richer?

Blair Kerkhoff, Kansas City Star: A look at how a four-team playoff would have impacted college football from 2007-11.

Gene Wojciechowski, ESPN: The presidents got the playoff plan right.

Chris Murray, Reno Gazette-Journal: Nevada coach Chris Ault is in favor of a playoff, but he doesn't like teams playing 14 or 15 games.

Brian Murphy, Idaho Statesman: Boise State could benefit from a playoff.

Berry Tramel, Oklahoman: Jerry Jones' Cowboys Stadium and the Cotton Bowl are likely to be a big part of the new postseason. And that's good for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Steve Serby, New York Post: Finally, money talks, BCS walks.
